Level 1- “Rhythms to make your Improv Swing”- John Hill, instructor

We will work on specific rhythms to use so that your improv has stability - bring your instrument and be ready to play!!

 

Level 2- "I Love The Way You Play Melodies!"- Scott Cowan, instructor

Learn how to deliver a jazz melody using specific techniques resulting in a memorable, personal and fun melodic performance.

 

Level 3- “Play Like You're Talking”- Jordan Schug, instructor

In this clinic we will look at the characteristics of speech and apply it to how we approach music.

 

Level 4- “How to Interpret Chord Symbols”- Vincent Chandler, instructor

Almost every chord we encounter is justified by the Major, Melodic Minor and

Melodic Minor scales. And they are notated in a particular way. In this session, I will demonstrate what chords are derived from modes and their nomenclature.

Level 1- "In The Beginning There Was Blues"- Scott Cowan, instructor

How do Jazz Masters come up with gripping improvisations with a 6-7note scale? We'll unearth their secrets and work on using techniques from artists like Louis Armstrong, Freddie Hubbard and others.

 

Level 2- "Fun with Fundamentals"- Russ Miller, instructor

A focus on the basic chords and scales that apply to improvisation and an emphasis on how to practice and how to make the practice fun.

 

Level 3 - "Dominant Chord Scale Options"- Chuck Newsome, instructor

We’ll lay out all of the common Dominant Chord Scale options by exploring the chord tones, extensions/alterations they imply and their most common harmonic contexts. Options are vast but far from infinite. We’ll help your understanding of Dominant Chord options.

 

Level 4- "Just Duet"- James Hughes, instructor

Explore playing different duo combinations inside of a quartet. A great way to build communication within a small group.

You don't need to be born with perfect pitch to have giant ears. Learn how to grow your ability to play by ear.

 

Level 2- "The Mental Side of Music"- Chuck Newsome, instructor

This is a guided discussion of what factors inside our brains hold us back and how we might overcome them. Included topics: performance anxiety and mind/body balance, self-assessment vs. self-loathing, envisioning long-term vs. smaller goals, among others.

 

Level 3- “Different Eras of Jazz in your Playing”- John Hill, instructor

We will demonstrate how to approach various playing styles across the eras of jazz history.

Level 1- “All God’s Children Need Rhythm”- Vincent Chandler, instructor

Understanding rhythmic notation will enhance your ability to read and write music. It will also increase the types of musical environments you can participate in, from chamber to large ensembles. Understanding rhythmic notation will even improve how you hear and transcribe music. In this session, I will present rhythmic exercises that will give you the tools for success.



Level 2- “Play Roots with Records”- Jordan Schug, instructor

In this clinic you will learn how to easily find and play the root of the chord, and we'll play along with some classic jazz recordings.

 

Level 3- "Harmonic Tension and Release"- Scott Cowan, instructor

We'll look at spicing up your use of alterations on V7 chords resolving to Imaj/minor. We’ll use examples from Kenny Dorham, Tom Harrell and others.

 

Level 4- "Advanced Rhythm-Based Improv Class"- Chuck Newsome, instructor

A deep dive into applying polyrhythms to single note improv. We'll check out Tuplets vs. Hemiolas and work on applying them to create lines over changes--all while keeping track of the original harmonic rhythm.

In this clinic we'll talk about everything you'll need to know before you play at your first jazz jam session.

 

Level 2- “Jazz from Detroit”- Vincent Chandler, instructor

Jazz musicians from Detroit have had a hand in every style of jazz since the Bebop era. In this session, I will share biographical information and music samples of Detroit All-Stars from Bebop to Hip Hop.

 

Level 3- "Take it Personally"- James Hughes, instructor

Add personality and nuance into your playing using techniques explained in class.

 

Level 4- “Tony Williams: Composer, Drummer, Bandleader”- John Hill, instructor

We will Analyze Three Tony Williams compositions and discuss their unique qualities.

Learn to play over blues changes through the technique of call and response. With a minimum number of notes students can get comfortable listening and playing along in a group setting that is fun and challenging.

 

Level 2- “The Rhythm section as a Unit”- John Hill, instructor

We will demonstrate the basic jobs of each rhythm section instrument and have students play each instrument.

 

Level 3- “Approach Tones and Enclosures”- Vincent Chandler, instructor

In jazz Improvisation the chord tones are the most important notes to target while moving through a harmonic progression. How you move to or around chord tones is accomplished by “Approach Tones and Enclosures.” This concept will help you gain control of the chromaticism found in Bebop and beyond.
